Below, you'll find information from Kevin Suzukida. Mr. S. is a PE teacher for several classes at our school.
Flexibility Flexibility doesn’t mean we have to do the splits or make our body like a pretzel. What flexibility means is that our muscles and joints (ex. wrists, knees, elbows) can bend and move easily. Flexible kids should be able to move in a lot of different directions and without pain, like in the pictures below...
Dynamic Stretching: - before you work out - always have movement - gets the blood flowing & your muscles warm quickly
Burpee Standing, Hands down, Kick-out, Push-up, Jump up
Examples of Static Stretching
Cool Down-Static Stretch Time!
- Static stretches are always done at the end of a workout
- "Static” means that you are not moving when stretching
- Static stretches help elongate your muscles and increase range of motion
- Should be done for at least 20 seconds, twice each muscle
Muscles - Diagram with Terminology
Static Stretches Please look at the pictures below and get in each pose and hold. Switch sides after 20 seconds
Hamstring (the back of your leg)
Quadriceps (thigh) - Keep knees close together!
Deltoid (shoulder):
- Reach your left arm across your body at chest height.
- Hook your right hand over your left elbow and pull the left arm closer to your chest to stretch a little farther. Switch after
Triceps (back of the arm):
- Bend your right elbow above your head and bring your palm as far down your back as you can
- Grab your right elbow with your left hand and gently pull it to the left until you feel a stretch
Cardiovascular Fitness: Getting to the Heart of the Matter
Here, you get to learn how the heart is different during rest and during physical activity.
Important terms to learn: heart, rest, heart, kidneys, oxygen, nutrients, circulation, organ
Whatis the heart?
Did you know that the number one reason people die in the U.S. is because of heart attack?
Your heart is one of the most important organs in your body. It is about the size of your fist and it’s in the middle of your chest.
An organ is a group of tissues in your body that does one or two things really well. Your heart is an organ that is a pump that never stops as long as you live!
Why is the heart important?
Look at the picture below on the left of the air pump. Just like the air pump, your heart is also a pump. Your heart pumps blood. The blood carries oxygen (air) and nutrients (food). When the heart pumps blood, it goes through all of your body. The air and food in the blood feeds the muscles and keeps them healthy. We need our heart to keep up alive!
Your heart is also a muscle. The more you make it work, the stronger it becomes. Exercise makes your heart pump blood faster through your body. This is called circulation. The kid in the picture below is running, making his blood pump fast! The heart pumps the blood, helping it “feed” and “clean” his whole body.
How do we make the heartstrong?
In order to keep your heart strong, you need to make it beat faster. Exercises like running, jumping, and playing sports make your heart beat faster. You need to exercise 7 days a week for 60 minutes a day to make your heart stronger.
